Daffodils – The Path of Self-Realisation

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils,…..

“Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.” The poem, ‘The Daffodils’, by the renowned Romantic poet, William Wordsworth, is a mysterious blend of Nature and philosophy.

……I gazed – and gazed – but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

Often, described as the Nature poetry, the daffodils are seen as an object of beauty that showers happiness in solitude. Indeed, for a school going kid, the poem is an excellent tool that subtly encourages visualisation.

Very recently I laid my hands on a collection, ‘Select English Poems’, compiled by A. Parthasarathy, an acclaimed exponent of Vedanta (Vedanta is an ancient Indian philosophy). The Preface to the book states that the select poems convey great human values, and “it ushers you to the goal of Self-realistion.”

And, there was ‘The Daffodils’, a path to spiritual Enlightenment!

According to the spiritual analysis of  ‘The Daffodils’,   “encompasses the three disciplines followed by meditation: karma (action), bhakti (devotion), and jnana (knowledge).

I stop to re-read the poem again. May be, the poet was a spiritual seeker engaged in selfless services, detached from the worldly pleasures, and who experienced Universal love, “the essence of devotion”. May be, his awareness gained him the Universal knowledge of Oneness.

May be, it was his self realisation that filled contentment.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

I am left wondering.

She Lives

brownie

She lay by the roadside quiet and lifeless

Walking away after a meal into the wilderness;

Her time has come to an end

Reality still to wade my heart’s bend…

The stray little kitty

Who made me witty,

My mind pictures her in my camera click

And I prefer to see her live and blink.

We are different and so are our fates

Yet care transpired to affection and long waits.

In a moment she has become my past

But memories of her short beautiful life will last.

Wonder if I shall miss her to eternity?

And awareness reminds “it’s destiny”.

How’s Life?

Lame I feel

Looking at life

Adornment negligent

Way too real

Raw wounds and pains indefinable

How palpable

Smile still lingered

Zest to living

Surpasses weaknesses

And my friend lived fighting

Wanting to make her memorable

While a few found pleasures

Others took her seriously

Smile still lingered

As I fathom the question

‘So, how’s life?’

And find myself answering

‘Good, in fact excellent’

Then when I see their expression

I long to interpret

Smile still lingered

Wonder who understood my friend ‘life’?

If happy I conjure

If unhappy I blame

Definitions simple conjectures

Our life through their eyes

Way too real

Adornment negligent

Looking at life

Lame I feel….

A Lover’s Eye

I waited all night

Tracing the path of the light.

The glow never once failed

And the rinsed clouds hailed.

As an afterthought,

Recollecting the ideas I bought

I looked through lover’s eyes;

The darkness in black did not lie….

He stirred the night into a silver bowl

And washed me deep down the soul;

Feeling the momentary pleasure unwind

I raised my hands to bind,

Conveying the message of a lifetime,

Renewing the promise on full moon night, every time.
