Silence of Nature

Reflections on our changing relationship with the natural world, and on the climate stories unfolding around us.

I keep wondering about a question that feels increasingly difficult to ignore: is nature speaking, or is it exhausted from trying to be heard?

Ancient landscapes can seem almost timeless, as though they have the strength to outlast us. Yet even these enduring forms of nature can change, retreat, and transform. And their change affects us too.

Our connection with the natural world may be held in elements that are less visible, yet deeply present. Thich Nhat Hanh’s idea of interbeing reminds us that we do not exist apart from nature; we exist in relationship with it. Robin Wall Kimmerer’s work similarly speaks of kinship and reciprocity between humans and the living world.

As my thoughts move towards our relationship with nature, I pause to consider whether the separation we create between ourselves and the natural world is only something we imagine. We breathe, consume, adapt, and exist within the same living systems that surround us. The depth of this relationship is that what happens in nature inevitably affects us.

Today is all that we have.

The connection may not always be visible. But it matters.

Silence means to me…

Silence has never felt singular to me. It can be a refuge, a burden, a gesture of civility, a form of resistance, or a quiet suffering. At times, it even becomes a shared unspoken agreement, what some might call a quiet conspiracy of silence.

Though not an emotion in itself, silence often carries the weight of one.

Vietnamese Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh observed that true silence is not merely the absence of noise but freedom from the inner chatter that keeps us from being present. Perhaps that is why silence is so difficult to define.

The more I reflected on it, the more it seemed to reveal less about sound and more about the way we relate to ourselves, to others, and to what remains unsaid.
